About the Foundation

Turning Awareness
Into Action

A Foundation Built on Belief

Abeegrah Foundation was born from witnessing a preventable crisis.

India faces a deficit of over 3 million blood units due to awareness gaps, and we exist to bridge this gap and empower communities to take meaningful action.

"An informed community is a healthier community."

Positioning: We are enablers of action-connecting awareness with real-world impact and empowering communities to take meaningful steps toward better health.

We are a healthcare awareness organisation. We do not provide medical services, connect patients to doctors, or offer clinical advice.

Vision

Our vision is to transform awareness into action, driving impactful health initiatives across India.

Awareness Campaign

India faces a critical gap between blood demand and supply. Our campaign raises awareness about every aspect of blood donation so communities can take informed, life-saving action.

What Is a Blood Bank?

A blood bank is a specialised facility that collects, tests, processes, and stores donated blood, a life-saving warehouse always ready when patients need it most.

Hospital blood bank laboratory

Hospital Blood Banks

Attached to hospitals, they collect, process, and supply blood directly to patients within the same facility. Essential for surgeries and in-house emergencies.

Community blood bank centre

Community Blood Banks

Independent centres serving multiple hospitals. They organise donation drives and maintain diverse blood group inventories for the broader community.

Mobile blood bank vehicle

Mobile Blood Banks

Specially equipped medical vehicles that travel to remote and underserved areas to collect blood donations, bringing the blood bank directly to communities in need.

What Is Blood Made Of?

Blood is far more than a red liquid, it's a complex mix of components, each with a vital role. One donation can save up to three lives because blood can be separated into distinct parts.

45%
of blood

Red Blood Cells

Carry oxygen from lungs to every cell in the body. Give blood its red colour. Critical for: surgery patients, accident victims, and anaemia patients.

53%
of blood

Plasma

The liquid that carries cells, nutrients, hormones, and proteins. Vital for clotting and immune response. Critical for: burn victims and trauma patients.

<1%
of blood

Platelets

Tiny cell fragments that form clots and stop bleeding. Critical for: dengue patients, cancer patients, and bleeding disorders.

<1%
of blood

White Blood Cells

The immune system's defence force, fighting infections and diseases. Critical for: immune-compromised patients and post-surgery recovery.

How to Donate Blood

Blood Donation in India 🇮🇳

India is one of the world's largest blood-collecting nations, yet a significant gap between supply and demand persists. Understanding this scenario is the first step to action.

🌾

Rural–Urban Divide

Most blood banks are in cities. Rural patients lose critical time travelling during emergencies.

😨

Persistent Myths & Fear

Misconceptions about pain and weakness prevent many from donating. Education is the most effective tool.

📦

Storage & Wastage

Improper storage infrastructure leads to blood wastage. Awareness about proper protocols can reduce losses.

📉

Seasonal Shortages

Donation drops during summers and festive seasons. Consistent community engagement is key.

🏛️

National Blood Policy (2007)

India mandates 100% voluntary, non-remunerated donation, eliminating paid donation systems for a safer supply.

📱

eRaktKosh Digital Platform

Government portal mapping blood bank availability in real time, enabling faster access to compatible blood.

🗓️

World Blood Donor Day, 14 June

Nationwide campaigns in schools, colleges, and offices every year.

🤝

NGO-Led Blood Camps

Organisations like Abeegrah Foundation reach communities where formal infrastructure is limited.

🏛️

Government Blood Banks

Run by state or central government, these are usually attached to public hospitals. They provide blood at low or no cost and are the backbone of emergency supply in government health facilities.

🏥

Private and Hospital Blood Banks

Located within private hospitals, these centres primarily serve their own patients. Supply is more reliable but access is limited to those using that facility.

🤝

Standalone Voluntary Blood Banks

Independent charitable or NGO-run centres that serve multiple hospitals and clinics. They depend entirely on voluntary donation drives and are the most accessible option for the general public.

2
seconds

Every 2 seconds, someone in India needs blood.

Regular voluntary donors (not replacement donors) are the only sustainable answer. One act of generosity keeps three people alive.

Did You Know?

Blood donation is one of the most powerful things a person can do, and it is full of surprises. Here are things worth knowing, whether you are a first-time donor or a long-time supporter.

⏱️

8–10 minutes

That is all the actual blood collection takes, shorter than most phone calls. The whole process, including registration and a short rest, wraps up in under an hour.

🔄

Recovery starts overnight

Your body begins replacing donated blood almost immediately. Plasma is replenished by the next morning, and red blood cells are fully restored within 4–6 weeks.

👥

One donation, three lives

Donated blood is separated into red cells, platelets, and plasma, each going to a different patient with a different need.

🔥

Around 650 calories burned

Your body works hard to regenerate what was given, making every donation doubly worthwhile for you and for those in need.

🥤

Less than a can of soft drink

A donation is just 450 ml. Out of the 5 litres your body carries, it barely notices the difference.

🌍

Your blood type echoes your ancestry

Type B is more common in South Asia, while type O dominates in South American indigenous populations. Every drop carries a piece of human history.

🚨

O-negative: the universal lifesaver

O-negative blood can be given to anyone, regardless of blood type, making every unit invaluable in accidents and emergencies when there is no time to check.

🔬

Screened for 12+ infections

Before reaching a patient, donated blood is tested for at least 12 infections. The blood supply is one of the most thoroughly screened substances in all of medicine.
